Mother India: A Political Biography
of Indira Gandhi
By Pranay
Gupte
Price:- Rs. 699.00
About the
Book:-
Mother India is the fascinating story of independent
India’s
most complex political figure: Indira Gandhi, the enigmatic and solitary
daughter of the country’s first prime minister, who rose to become prime
minister herself. From being the reticent Indu in the Nehru family, she
became one of the great leaders of the twentieth century.
|
|
Pranay
Gupte explores the life and times of ‘Mrs G’, who at the height of her
career was often compared to Bharat Mata—Mother India. Her ‘Garibi Hatao’
call and her efforts at bringing about a Green Revolution endeared her to
the electorate, but controversy and criticism, too, marked her years in
and out of office. From the time she engineered a split in the Congress
Party to emerge as its undisputed leader in the 1960s, through the
triumphal aftermath of the 1971 war, the infamous Emergency, right up to
Operation Bluestar which led to her brutal assassination on 31 October
1984, Mrs Gandhi’s legacy is still being determined.
This comprehensive biography, reissued in a
revised edition on Indira Gandhi’s twenty-fifth death anniversary, not
only explores her career and contradictions as a consummate politician,
but also her relationships as daughter, wife and mother. Packed with
lively anecdotes and cogent insights, this book is both a compelling
portrait of Indira Gandhi and a trenchant analysis of the politics of
twentieth-century India. |

Synopsis
Love marriages around the world are simple:
Boy loves girl. Girl loves boy. They get married.
In India, there are a few more steps:
Boy loves Girl. Girl loves Boy. Girl's family has to love boy. Boy's family has to love girl. Girl's Family has to love Boy's Family. Boy's family has to love girl's family. Girl and Boy still love each other. They get married.
Welcome to 2 States, a story about Krish and Ananya. They are from two different states of India, deeply in love and want to get married. Of course, their parents don’t agree. To convert their love story into a love marriage, the couple have a tough battle in front of them. For it is easy to fight and rebel, but it is much harder to convince. Will they make it? From the author of blockbusters Five Point Someone, One Night @ the Call Center and The 3 Mistakes of My Life, comes another witty tale about inter-community marriages in modern india.
Excerpt
Prologue
“Why am I referred here? I don’t have a problem,” I said. She didn’t react. Just gestured that I remove my shoes and take the couch. She had an office like any other doctor’s, minus the smells and cold, dangerous instruments. She waited for me to talk more. I hesitated and spoke again. “I’m sure people come here with big, insurmountable problems. Girlfriends dump their boyfriends everyday. Hardly the reason to see a shrink, right? What am I, a psycho?” “No, I am the psycho. Psychotherapist to be precise. If you don’t mind, I prefer that to shrink,” she said. ”Sorry,” I said. “It’s OK,” she said and reclined on her chair. No more than thirty, she seemed young for a shrink, sorry, psychotherapist. Certificates from top US universities adorned the walls like tiger heads in a hunter’s home. Yes, another South Indian had conquered the world of academics. Dr. Neeta Iyer, Valedictorian, Vassar College. “I charge five hundred rupees per hour,” she said. “Stare at the walls or talk. I’m cool either way.” I had spent twelve minutes, or a hundred bucks, without getting anywhere. I wondered if she would accept a partial payment and let me leave. “Dr. Iyer…” “Neeta is fine,” she said. “OK, Neeta, I don’t think my problem warrants this. I don’t know why Dr. Ramachandran sent me here.” She picked my file from her desk. “Let’s see. This is Dr. Ram’s brief to me – patient has sleep deprivation, has cut off human contact for a week, refuses to eat, has Google-searched on best ways to commit suicide.” She paused and looked at me with raised eyebrows. “I Google for all sorts of stuff,” I mumbled, “don’t you?” “The report says the mere mention of her name, her neighbourhood or any association, like her favourite dish, brings out unpredictable emotions ranging from tears to rage to frustration.” “I had a break-up. What do you expect?” I was irritated. “Sure, with Ananya who stays in Mylapore. What’s her favourite dish? Curd rice?” I sat up straight. “Don’t,” I said weakly and felt a lump in my throat. I fought back tears. “Don’t,” I said again. “Don’t what?” Neeta egged me on, “Minor problem, isn’t it?” “Fuck minor. It’s killing me.” I stood agitatedly. “Do you South Indians even know what emotions are all about?” “I’ll ignore the racist comment. You can stand and talk, but if it is a long story, take the couch. I want it all,” she said. I broke into tears. “Why did this happen to me?” I sobbed. She passed me a tissue. “Where do I begin?” I said and sat gingerly on the couch. “Where all love stories begin. From when you met her the first time,” she said. She drew the curtains and switched on the air-conditioner. I began to talk and get my money’s worth.

Hilary
Mantel wins Booker for gripping 16th century tale
In a short-list bereft of Indian
writers, this year's Man Booker prize has gone to British novelist Hilary Mantel
for her gripping 16th century tale titled Wolf
Hall.
Mantel, 57, received 50,000 pounds
as prize money on Tuesday night in what is considered one of the
English-speaking world's most prestigious literary prizes.
Indian writers such as Salman
Rushdie, Anita Desai, Aravind Adiga and Arundhati Roy have previously won the
prize but this year's shortlist did not feature any Indian.
Other writers who made the short
list this year were A S Byatt, J M Coetzee, Adam Foulds, Simon Mawer and Sarah
Waters.
'Wolf Hall' is set in the 1520s and
tells the story of Thomas Cromwell's rise to prominence in the Tudor
court.
Accepting the award at The
Guildhall, Mantel said that if winning the Booker Prize was like being in a
train crash "at this moment I am happily flying through the
air".
She told the audience that it had
taken her about 20 years to decide whether to write this particular
book.
She said: "I couldn't begin until I
felt secure enough to say to my publisher - just what a publisher always wants
to hear - 'this will take me several years you know'. But they took it on the
chin."
Mantel added: "When I began the book
I knew I had to do something very difficult, I had to interest the historians, I
had to amuse the jaded palate of the critical establishment and most of all I
had to capture the imagination of the general reader."
Chairman of judges James Naughtie
said: "Our decision was based on the sheer bigness of the book. The boldness of
its narrative, its scene setting. The extraordinary way that Hilary Mantel has
created what one of the judges has said was a contemporary novel, a modern
novel, which happens to be set in the 16th Century. We thought it was an
extraordinary piece of story-telling."
Mantel was the bookmaker's favourite
to win the award. Ion Trewin, literary director of the Booker Prizes, said the
last time a favourite walked off with the prize was Yann Martel's Life of Pi in 2002.
The Man Booker Prize for Fiction,
first awarded in 1969, promotes the finest in fiction by rewarding the very best
book of the year.
28 September One peek at MSN India brings you up to speed with what's hot in the world today Drag n' drop
Last week Oprah announced that Say You’re one of Them was her latest pick, see her talking about the book here http://www.oprah.com/media/20090921_obc_oprah-say-youre-one-of-them-video, it has entered the US best sellers at number 4 on the New York Times paperback chart.
"Each one of these stories really just left me gasping." — Oprah
Through the sanitized windows of our televisions and newspapers, the truth about the pervasive poverty and violence that exists in so many African nations comes only in fits and starts, clouded by physical distance and apathy toward what we may feel we cannot relate to or change. In his first collection of stories, Say You're One of Them, Akpan brings to life the issues facing children in one of the most beleaguered places on earth, so that their voices will no longer go unheard.
In five separate narratives, each told from the perspective of a child from a different African country, Say You're One of Them vividly portrays the horror and beauty to be found in both the history-altering events and the mundane details of everyday life. In these stories of family, friendship, betrayal and redemption, Akpan highlights the tenacity and perseverance of his young protagonists.
The 8-year-old narrator of "An Ex-Mas Feast" needs only enough money to buy books and pay fees in order to attend school. Even when his 12-year-old sister takes to the streets to raise these meager funds, his dream can't be realized. Food comes first. His family lives in a street shanty in Nairobi, Kenya, but their ways of loving and taking advantage of each other strike a universal chord. In the second of his stories originally published in The New Yorker, "My Parents' Bedroom," Akpan takes us far beyond what we thought we knew about the tribal conflict in Rwanda. The story is told by a young girl, who, with her little brother, witnesses the worst possible scenario between parents. This singular collection will also take the reader inside Nigeria, Benin and Ethiopia, revealing in beautiful prose the harsh realities of life in Africa for children.
Akpan's voice is a literary miracle, rendering lives of almost unimaginable deprivation and terror into stories that are nothing short of transcendent. 9780349120645SAY YOU'RE ONE OF THEMUwem AkpanB format PB/ Abacus£7.99/ Rs 395 Dear All,

Title: Bollywood In
Posters
Author: S
M M Ausaja
Publisher: Om Books
International
ISBN: 9788187108559
Pages: 275
Binding: Hard Bound
Price:INR 2500
Description:
'Bollywood in Posters' is the debut book by
film historian S M M Ausaja that is being launched by Amitabh Bachchan in
the forthcoming IIFA weekend in Macau on
the 11th of June. Published by Om Books International, it is all about
celebrating Poster art in Hindi cinema - an art that could never win an
art historian's attention, at least till the mid nineties. Kitsch is what
it would be generally referred to. The brush-stroke art that appeared in
the publicity material of films till early eighties was belatedly
celebrated. There were artistes - poster designers - who specialized in
publicity art and they were often very popular within the producers'
community, though somewhat anonymous to the rest of the world. Hindi films
arrived in 1931 with Ardeshir Irani's Alam Ara. In the thirties, forties
and fifties, there were lithographic posters. The lithographic press gave
way to the offset press and posters of seventies and eighties were mostly
offset prints. The nineties popularized the digital press. Consequently,
by the end of eighties, the era of hand painted posters ended, replaced by
the printed collage of images appearing on the posters. With the end of
the hand-painted posters, came the realization of treating the originals
as pieces of art, thereby making the hand-painted poster of any film from
thirties to eighties as an object of art. This book is in honor of all the
unsung poster designers who made the poster art of the country immortal
with their valuable contribution. |
